FAQs
What is Medicare Advantage and how is it different from Original Medicare?
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans often include additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage, which are not covered by Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans typically have their own networks of doctors and hospitals, and you may need referrals for specialists.
Does Medicare Advantage cover prescription drugs?
Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage (Part D), so you won’t need a separate drug plan. However, not all plans offer this, so it’s important to check the plan’s details. If a plan doesn’t include drug coverage, and you want it, you may have to consider a different plan or go back to Original Medicare and enroll in a standalone Part D plan.
Can I switch Medicare Advantage plans anytime?
No, you can only switch Medicare Advantage plans during certain times of the year. The main periods are the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31). During these times, you can change plans or switch back to Original Medicare. In some cases, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to life changes like moving or losing other insurance.
